Wabasha’s new Public Bike program surpasses “registered user” goal in the first two months.
Local organizers and advocates had set a target goal of 120 registered users in the first year beginning in June 2019.
Their goal has been surpassed with 146 registered users signing up in just the first two months since the June 14, 2019 kick-off celebration!
The bikes will be available until October 27 when they will be moved to storage for the season.

Wabasha Biking Guide is now available with SHIP support.
Craig Falkum, a member of the Wabasha Walk/Bike Advocates, submitted a grant application to Wabasha County SHIP on behalf of the Wabasha Bicycle Club, Inc. with a goal of increasing access to bike routes. Eric Pierson, also a member of Wabasha Walk/Bike Advocates, worked diligently to identify routes and rest stops along the way. The Wabasha Biking Guide was made available online June 2019. Printed copies are available at Wabasha-Kellogg Chamber of Commerce while supplies last.
Check out page 23 of the Biking Guide which shows the City of Wabasha’s 1, 3 and 5 mile routes. These route markings have been freshly painted making them easier to follow. You can now check out Wabasha’s bike share bikes for FREE to use on these routes.

What is the Public Bike Share Program?
With coordination help from the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP), Wabasha Bike/Walk Advocates have secured six Republic Bikes for the City of Wabasha Public Bikes program. The bikes have coaster brakes, fenders, a chain guard and non-inflatable tires (similar to the photo). Bikes have a basket on the handlebars and are designed for short distance rides.

SPECIAL THANKS
This program is made possible by Wabasha Bike/Walk Advocates, comprised of a group of city officials, local merchants and citizens, with assistance from SHIP Coordinator Tina Moen. The group met for almost a year to find a way to provide bicycles for visitors and local residents who do not have a bike and want to explore the community to be active. Wabasha Public Works Director, Tony Johnson, has been helpful in identifying how the city can aid this venture and is the fiscal agent for the SHIP-funded project. Bike shop owner, Dave Wogen, of River Rider Cycle first proposed the idea and helped locate vendors. The Wabasha Main Street organization has been supportive as a great way to get people interested in the historic downtown and to be a healthy way to explore an active river town.
If you would like information on what it means to partner with Wabasha County SHIP on healthy eating, physical activity, and/or tobacco-free environment projects, please email Tina Moen or call her at 651-565-5200.
Wabasha Bike/Walk group is asking residents to help plan the future of walking and biking in the Wabasha area.
The Wabasha Bike/Walk advocate group recently received a grant from Wabasha SHIP to purchase six new bicycles which can be used by the public starting summer 2019. Advocates are now planning biking and walking routes that will connect with existing routes as well as places of interest in the Wabasha area.
Hosted by Wabasha SHIP, the group wants to hear ideas from residents that can lead to healthier citizens through walking and biking. Be sure to attend their next meeting and share your ideas!
Next meeting:
Feb. 13, 2019, 2:30 pm
Wabasha County Courthouse Annex meeting room
